Insert Set Flashback: 1997-98 Ultra Jam City

The Set:
1997-98 Ultra Jam City

Set Odds:
1 in 8 series 1 packs

Key Cards:
Kobe Bryant $8.00
Shaquille O’Neal $4.00
Kevin Garnett $3.00

Why I Like It:
Oh man, how to get started.  How sweet would a modern-day Jam City set be?  Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard, LeBron, etc… highlighting a set of the league’s best dunkers?  Or a set with past slam-dunk champions?  The Jam City name had tons of potential.

The cartoon-y black and white background makes the color shot of the player jump off the card.  Putting some of the league’s arenas into the background would have been a nice touch.

One thing I found amusing from the cards above: How does Juwan have a pass into Jam City when the back of the card says that he likes to step out for 18-footers?  Howard could throw it down in his younger days, but at least mention that rather than his set-shot ability.

Insert Set Flashback: 2000-01 Ultra Thrillinium

The Set:
2000-01 Ultra Thrillinium

Set Odds:
1 in 48 packs

Key Cards:
Kobe Bryant $20.00
Shaquille O’Neal $10.00

Why I Like It:
Although the rookie class wasn’t particularly strong for the 2000-01 season, the inserts made some of the products worth buying.  2000-01 Ultra Thrillinium is filled with some of the influential and exciting players in the game going into the new new millenium, and with an insert ratio of 1 in 48 packs, and with a parallel version /100, this insert set was a fairly desirable one.  The card in particular that took me back was the Jason Williams Kings card.  That Kings team with Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovic truly was a thrill to watch, rising to one of the Western Conference elite teams and creating a strong rivalry with the Shaq and Kobe Lakers.

Insert Set Flashback: 1994-95 Ultra Rebound Kings

Change of plans for today’s post. I was hoping to have a box break for today’s Wednesday Wax. Unfortunately the boxes that came in earlier in the week were damaged during shipping. Instead I am highlighting another insert set, 1994-95 Ultra Rebound Kings.

The Set:
1994-95 Ultra Rebound Kings

Set Odds:
1:2 Series 2 packs

Key Cards:
Shaquille O’Neal $2.00
Chris Webber $1.00

Why I Like It:
One of the other first insert sets I attempted to build.  I opened a ton of packs of 94-95 Ultra and it became one of my favorite sets because I was so familar with the cards.  Rebound Kings is a 10 card set that contains cards of 6 current/future Hall of Famers, 5 of them true centers (Mourning, Mutombo, Olajuwon, O’Neal, Robinson).  Pretty good ratio there – shows how the league has gone away from the traditional center toward a power forward/center hybrid.

Friday Frivolity: 1994-95 Ultra David Wood #252

Poor David Wood. The photographer did not do Mr. Wood any favors on this 1994-95 Ultra base set card. What’s amusing is that any of the images on the back of the card would have worked just fine for the front of the card, saving Wood years of ridicule. We should all thank David for being a good sport.
